As a mathematician who taught statistics and coauthored a statistics textbook, I used to bristle at the quote that is generally attributed to Disraeli, “THere are three types of lies, Lies, Dammed lies and Statistics” Upon reflection I think I understand what this adage is trying to saying. Lies are those “little white lies we tell that we think will hurt no one or actually make others feel good. “Dammed lies” are the big intentional falsehoods we tell to hurt or damage someone greatly. “Statistics” refer to using an amoral tool by accuratingly reporting something but not telling the whole story to make us or our position look positive.
Thank you for sharing and explaining that so well!
My simple mind though can’t totally understand why lies are classified. What’s the purpose of classifying it when in the end there is not as much destinations as to the classifications of lie. There is no white heaven, red heaven, liars’ hell, damned liars’ hell, statisticians’ hell…
Pardon my simple thinking. Admittedly my mind can’t fathom as much as the others but I’m grateful that I can learn from everyone.
Have a great day and blessings to you! 🙂
A number of years ago, a veteran chief academic officer offered the following piece of advice to new and perspective chief academic officers. He said, “Always tell the truth.” He continued by saying that this had nothing to do with ethics; it was strictly a practical matter. When you always tell the truth, you never have to remember what you said to whom.
I remember this one from childhood 🙂 We had to recite it over and over and over again. If the thought of distorting the truth crossed our minds, we’d “hear” this replaying in our heads … 🙂
Back in the day, lying was not considered ‘cute’! Little white lies are the same as big red ones.
Thanks for the reminder. I’m leaving you another smile below.
“Speak the truth and speak it ever
Cost it what it will.
He who hides the wrong he does,
Does the wrong things still!”
Deception leads to no good end! Thanks for the walk down memory lane 🙂
Ann how I wish that somebody shared this one to me when I was young — I love the rhyme 🙂
As for the wisdom therein ‘Thou shall not lie’, my father’s steady stare, and the pain of the belt were more than enough reminders.
Thank you for blessing me today! 🙂
Thank you for teaching me, reminding me, convicting me and confirming Him in my life! God has been talking to me about humility, being humble. No covering up, no tangled tales to hide what is and what isn’t. Do you have a hot line open to Him about me or what? 🙂 God bless you and all the ways He speaks through you!
Dear My Best Friend Rhea,
Are you referring to all the made-up stuff about me that I was a figment of everyone’s imagination!

I can convince myself that I am right even when I have to cover a lie with many coats of paint. The stain shows up no matter what I do.
03/23/2011 at 9:26 AM
ahaha! it eats up the paint!
Thanks for being honest 🙂
03/22/2011 at 9:33 PM
simple and true! nicely done!

Great quote 🙂 Better to be honest with yourself and those around you in my opinion
03/22/2011 at 1:01 PM
Perfect take on honesty.
Have fun with your true self today! 🙂

Thank you so much for sharing that! With truth there’s no stressing the mind and distressing the soul. 🙂

Rea,
This is a good quote. And Deception can be so subtle. Thank you for this reminder.

So subtle until it swallowed the whole of us. Praying that we will never surrender even a piece.
🙂

This speaks of childhood memory… repetition is the law of memory
03/21/2011 at 7:23 PM
Am I the only one who missed this as a child? It’s okay because I still got to smile now 🙂
03/21/2011 at 1:11 PM
And the truth will set you free 🙂
I like the aspect of ‘practice’ rather than doing, it gives me a thought that their is still time to stop for those that want to deceive.
Take care Alan.
03/21/2011 at 7:21 PM
I always learn from what you see and share! 🙂
03/21/2011 at 11:56 AM
This is one of my childhood favorites ~~~
03/21/2011 at 7:19 PM
Fun to memorize; best to remember 🙂
03/21/2011 at 11:38 AM
So very true, ‘spoon’…I read somewhere “If you tell the truth you don’t have to remember anything.” 🙂
03/21/2011 at 7:14 PM
True!
With lies you got to remember where to dig it 🙂
03/21/2011 at 11:36 AM
Rea, This is a great quote. Deception does no good, whether the lies seem big or little, they are all displeasing in God’s eyes. Peace, Linda
03/21/2011 at 7:11 PM
Thanks for speaking the truth Linda! 🙂
03/21/2011 at 11:35 AM
The oldest wisdom words are often the best. A good reminder for always. Thanks!
03/21/2011 at 7:09 PM
Yes. Those that hold true regardless of time 🙂
03/21/2011 at 11:17 AM
That is such a delicate way to put it, isn’t it? To sugar coat lying with words that sound a little nicer?
As a recovering alcoholic, I remember those days so well… the way the web just grew exponentially until even I didn’t know what was true.
What a great reminder… God changed me!! 🙂
03/21/2011 at 7:08 PM
And the black widow spider is waiting to devour us. Good that we have a chance to be untangled and saved!
I love to hear “God changed me!!” We can’t do it without Him 🙂

True.. like a spider that starts spinning.. the web of sticky…
03/21/2011 at 6:33 PM
and we must be careful to the web trap — delicate but deadly 🙂
